need help - Accidental format of C drive
Ok, so yeah, as the title suggest I just accidentally formatted a drive and don't necessarily want to pay $300 for some software that I'm not sure will work. Hopefully the knowledge base here can help. What is the best (or any) way to get back data that I just formatted away using Quick Format in Windows 2000.

A high level format writes $F6 into every byte of every data sector on the disk. Tim Meighan Then the DOS FORMAT command is NOT high-level, by your definition of the term. To clarify this issue: the DOS FORMAT _is_ destructive on FLOPPY disks. If you've formatted a floppy, you can kiss your data good-bye.

There is a DOS Unformat command, which restores a disk accidentally formatted by the Format command. You need to get a boot disk -- DO NOT BOOT YOUR ACTUAL COMPUTER -- that has this command on it. You can run it with a /TEST flag first, to see what it would recover, before genuinely unformatting it.
